Is your BMW Apple CarPlay compatible? Check by screen (EVO ID5/ID6)

Can my BMW get Apple CarPlay? Ask this BEFORE any activation. The answer does not really depend on the model or the year, but on one precise detail: the type of screen (iDrive system) installed. Here is how to identify it without getting it wrong.

Compatibility depends on the screen, not the model

On a BMW, Apple CarPlay is not tied to the series (1, 3, 5, X...) or a specific year: it depends on the generation of the multimedia system, called iDrive. Two BMWs of the same year can have different screens depending on their original options.

That is why the VIN alone does not guarantee compatibility: it confirms the make and approximate year, but not the screen type. The check is done directly in the car.

The BMW screen generations

Here are the main iDrive generations you will come across:

  • ·CIC (around 2009-2013): older system, not compatible with CarPlay activation.
  • ·NBT (around 2013-2016): not compatible.
  • ·NBT EVO / EVO ID4 (around 2016-2017): depending on the version, generally not covered.
  • ·EVO ID5 and ID6 (from around 2016-2017): these are the systems compatible with CarPlay activation.

How do I know which screen I have?

Two simple methods, directly in the car:

  • ·Via the menu: iDrive → Settings → System → Software version. The screen shows the system type (ID5, ID6...).
  • ·Via the interface: ID5/ID6 systems show a home screen with customizable tiles/widgets, whereas older CIC/NBT show a more static list menu.
  • ·If in doubt: a dealer or a BMW coder can confirm the screen type from your VIN.

Factory CarPlay vs activation

On BMWs with an EVO ID5/ID6 screen, the hardware can handle Apple CarPlay. But the function is sometimes locked if it was not ordered when the car was bought. Activation unlocks this function already present in the vehicle, without the official subscription.

In practice, from your VIN we generate the file (USB stick) or the coding code (cable) matching your car. You apply it yourself in a few minutes.

Check before you order

The only real prerequisite is therefore an EVO ID5 or ID6 screen. Take two minutes to check it via the iDrive menu before ordering: that is what avoids disappointment. Once compatibility is confirmed, activation is quick and simple.

Frequently asked questions

Is the VIN enough to know if my BMW is CarPlay compatible?+

No. The VIN confirms the make and approximate year, but not the screen type (CIC, NBT, EVO ID5/ID6). Compatibility depends on the screen, to be checked in the car via iDrive → Settings → System → Software version.

Which BMW screens are compatible with CarPlay activation?+

The EVO ID5 and ID6 systems (generally from 2016-2017). Older screens (CIC, NBT) are not compatible.

Is the activation permanent?+

The activation unlocks CarPlay on a compatible vehicle. It can be reversed by a coder, but no technical support is provided for that.
