BMW CarPlay activation: USB stick or E-Sys cable? Which method for your screen

Once you have confirmed your BMW has an EVO ID5/ID6 screen, one question remains before activating Apple CarPlay: USB stick or cable? The right method depends on your screen's firmware. Here is how to tell, and what each one involves.

Two ways to apply the activation

A BMW CarPlay activation is delivered as a file or a code. There are two ways to apply it to the car: a FAT32 USB stick, or an ENET cable connected to a Windows PC running E-Sys (BMW coding software). Both reach the same result; what changes is the procedure and the equipment.

The USB method is standalone: you copy a file to a stick and the car reads it. The cable method uses a coder's setup: ENET cable, laptop, E-Sys.

Which method does my car need?

It depends on your screen's firmware version. As a rule of thumb: firmware before the letter 'P' takes the USB method; firmware from 'P' and newer takes the cable/E-Sys method.

You find the version in the car: iDrive → Settings → System → Software version. If you are unsure, give us your VIN and we match the right method.

The USB stick method (standalone)

No laptop, no cable, no software. When your firmware supports it, this is the simplest route. What you need:

  • ·A FAT32-formatted USB stick (most already are, or reformat in two clicks).
  • ·The activation file we generate for your VIN.
  • ·A few minutes: plug it in, let the car read it, done.

The E-Sys cable method (for coders)

A bit more setup, but the route for newer firmware, with full control. What you need:

  • ·An ENET cable (OBD to Ethernet) between the car and a Windows PC.
  • ·E-Sys installed, plus the coding code we provide for your VIN.
  • ·Basic coding comfort: you follow the installation guide step by step.

Not sure? Let the VIN decide

The safest path is to let the VIN decide. From it we generate the file or the code matched to your car, and tell you which method applies. Full-screen is included, and you choose full-screen or standard display.

Frequently asked questions

USB or cable, which is better for BMW CarPlay?+

Neither is 'better' in quality: both give the same CarPlay. The choice depends on your screen firmware. Before version 'P' = USB stick; 'P' and newer = ENET cable with E-Sys.

Do I need a laptop to activate CarPlay on my BMW?+

Only for the cable method. The USB method is standalone: you just apply a file from a FAT32 USB stick, no laptop needed.

How do I know my screen firmware version?+

In the car: iDrive → Settings → System → Software version. If unsure, we determine the right method from your VIN.
