Where the VIN is on a BMW motorcycle
On most BMW Motorrad models the VIN is stamped on the steering head (the frame section behind the front forks) and printed on a label, often near the frame or under the seat.
As with cars, it also appears on the registration document. Check that the frame stamping and the paperwork match exactly.
What the VIN tells you
The structure is the same 17 characters: a manufacturer section, a descriptor section and an identifier section with the model year and serial number.
Decoding confirms that the bike is a genuine BMW Motorrad, its country of production and its model year, so you can check it lines up with the advert and the registration date.
Why it matters for a used bike
Motorcycles are stolen and cloned just like cars. A VIN that does not match between the frame and the papers is a major warning sign.
Decoding also settles model-year disputes, which affect value and insurance, and confirms the exact variant when a seller is vague.
