What is a VIN?
The VIN is a unique 17-character number standardised by the international ISO 3779 standard. Each position has a precise meaning and identifies a vehicle unambiguously anywhere in the world.
On a BMW, MINI, Rolls-Royce or Alpina, this number reveals the manufacturer, the country and plant of production, and the model year.
The VIN structure in three blocks
The VIN breaks down into three logical sections, easy to remember:
- ·Positions 1 to 3 - the WMI (World Manufacturer Identifier): the manufacturer and country. For example, "WBA" indicates a BMW built in Germany.
- ·Positions 4 to 9 - the VDS (Vehicle Descriptor Section): the vehicle description (model, body, engine) and a check digit at position 9.
- ·Positions 10 to 17 - the VIS (Vehicle Identifier Section): the model year (position 10), the plant (position 11) and the production serial number.
Reading the model year (position 10)
The 10th position indicates the model year. The letters I, O, Q, U and Z are never used, to avoid confusion. For example: G = 2016, K = 2019, N = 2022, R = 2024.
Careful: on many BMWs the model year is not reliably encoded at position 10, so it may come back as undetermined. That does not mean the VIN is wrong.
The check digit (position 9)
The 9th position is a check digit computed from the other characters. It helps detect a typo. This check is mandatory in North America; some European BMW VINs do not follow it, so a mismatch does not always mean an error.
